Automobiles and the Department of Motor Vehicles (MVD)
The State of Arizona requires all residents to obtain an Arizona Driver’s license as soon as residency is established. There is no grace period. Your vehicles must be registered at that time as well and all cars built after 1966 must pass emissions testing. Arizona imposes a vehicle license tax instead of a personal property tax on vehicles. The initial tax base is 60% of the manufacturer’s list price on new cars and it is reduced by 14% per year thereafter. The tax rate is 4% of the assessed valuation. The minimum vehicle license tax is $10 and payments are due when you register your vehicle. Of course, every car must be insured for bodily injury and property damage before it can be registered.
